Skyye Kimmons · Chicago Portrait by Blake Martin

Three generations, one camera bag.

My grandfather made portraits. My father shot the Chicago blues and jazz scene, and some fashion when the mood took him. I was never the one with the camera.

That changed on August 19, 2021, the day my father died at home. I found his camera bag while looking for something for my stepmother, and I decided no one else was going to touch it. I took the bag, and I took his nickname, so the name would keep working. I still shoot with both.

"You can't be what you can't see."

What started as a promise became a practice. I build editorial and commercial images for brands and institutions who understand that a picture is a position, not a decoration. Campaigns for e.l.f., Milani, Harry's, and Michael Kors. Editorials in GMARO, MALVIE, Éclair, and Moevir. Runway at New York, London, and Chicago Fashion Week.

Alongside the commercial work, I direct fine art projects with longer horizons: For The Chicago Kid, a memorial series, and the Forty Over 40 Foundation, which puts women over forty in front of a lens that takes them seriously. Both come from the same place the camera bag did.
